Lust has existed since Adam. It has been the driving force behind some of the greatest goods, and greatest evils in history. Yes, lust has produced a lot of good. But before we continue, let us define what lust is.

Lust

Lust is not plain evil in the flesh of man. It is not the sexual passion that burns in the hearts or souls of men and women. No. Lust is none of that. The word lust comes from the German and Dutch for “a strong desire for.”

In modern usage, it is safe to assume that whenever someone uses lust, they are referring to sexual desire. In fact, I almost never use the word to refer to desire for anything else other than sexual pleasure.

But why is it necessary that we understand the original meaning of lust? It is for two reasons. First, lust appears in the Bible:

For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. This means that the Holy Spirit strongly desires something that is against our “normal” desires. The Bible then tells us not to do the things that we would like to do.

The fall of man

When man sinned against God, human nature fell. From that time onward, children were born in sin. Man inherit from Adam what we now call original sin, and that sin brought death and damnation to the world. Then default desires of mankind, then, became sinful (Psalm 51:5). We started to be selfish, self-centred, and egocentric. We became proud, arrogant, and deceitful. Mankind became jealous, envious, and full of hate. St. Paul writes it perfectly in his letter to the Galatians:

When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarrelling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
– Galatians 5:19-21

Our natural lusts (desires), are leading us to hell. The sad news is that we have now developed a culture around satisfying every desire we have. The whole do-whatever-makes-you-happy industry is booming, and especially now in the 21st century. Our culture has taken a bad shift from doing what is right, to doing what feels great. It’s “do you” with no limitations, boundaries, or objections. “Whatever you like is fine,” they say.

Paradigm shift

We have turned from the Word of God to the voice of celebrities and politicians to decide how to live our lives. Almost always, the public figures we emulate are not even Christian. Sometimes, we have no reference at all. “I am my own god” cries the heart of fallen man.

How can a Christian support abortion, when God says to the child,

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
– Jeremiah 1:5

…and to you, He says,

You shall not murder.
– Exodus 20:13

Just… How can you do that?

What abortion really is (Medical Evidence)

Abortion is intrinsically murder. You’re taking drugs and poisoning another human being. You’re using a sharp knife and cutting her to pieces. Or do you think the baby inside the womb is not human? Doesn’t even medical science tell you otherwise?

“Human development begins after the union of male and female gametes or germ cells during a process known as fertilization (conception). “Fertilization is a sequence of events that begins with the contact of a sperm (spermatozoon) with a secondary oocyte (ovum) and ends with the fusion of their pronuclei (the haploid nuclei of the sperm and ovum) and the mingling of their chromosomes to form a new cell. This fertilized ovum, known as a zygote, is a large diploid cell that is the beginning, or primordium, of a human being.”
– Moore, Keith L. Essentials of Human Embryology. Toronto: B.C. Decker Inc, 1988, p.2

The development of a human being begins with fertilization, a process by which two highly specialized cells, the spermatozoon from the male and the oocyte from the female, unite to give rise to a new organism, the zygote.”
– Langman, Jan. Medical Embryology. 3rd edition. Baltimore: Williams and Wilkins, 1975, p. 3

We must respect all levels of development as human. The teenager, the young adult, the man in his 40s, and the senior citizen all deserve respect. How much more respect and love must we show this initial developmental period of all mankind. For without this phase, would we have Mother Teresa or Martin Luther King Jr.? If he was treated as a clump of cells when he was in his mother’s womb, would Nelson Mandela have achieved anything?

Which makes you wonder: how many more great men and women have been killed? What would they have done for us? Cure cancer? End global warming? End all wars and hunger? How many more babies are we willing to kill in cold blood?

Homosexuality

And not only do we please our evil desires to kill a helpless unborn child, we please our desires to have sexual relations with the same sex. Yes, homosexuality is wrong in the sight of God. As the Bible says:

Do not practice homosexuality, having sex with another man as with a woman. It is a detestable sin.
– Leviticus 18:22

This is the reference point of almost every Christian I’ve met. It seems flawless until someone says, “Well, that was in the old testament. We are under the Grace of Christ now and the law doesn’t apply.” I’ve even heard someone say, “We are called to love. How can we prevent this beautiful loving relationship of the heart on the grounds that they aren’t of the same sex? Is love that shallow to you?”

First of all, being gay isn’t just mentioned in the old testament. The New Testament also talks about it:

For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking and darkened in their foolish hearts. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images of mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

Therefore God gave them up in the desires of their hearts to impurity for the dishonouring of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator, who is forever worthy of praise! Amen. For this reason God gave them over to dishonourable passions.

Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. Likewise, the men abandoned natural relations with women and burned with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

Furthermore, since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, He gave them up to a depraved mind, to do what should not be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and hatred. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant, and boastful. They invent new forms of evil; they disobey their parents. They are senseless, faithless, heartless, merciless. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things are worthy of death, they not only continue to do these things, but also approve of those who practice them.
– Romans 1:21-32

The reason behind a rise in homosexuality

Let me highlight a few things you may have missed in all that. These unholy passions started because men refused to Glorify God. And so God let them have their way, and it resulted in all sorts of abominations. The rise in abortions and homosexuality in our culture isn’t coincidentally rising the same way atheism is. The more people refuse to glorify God, the more our culture falls into chaos. The last part is particular interesting. Although people know it’s wrong, they keep doing it and approve of those who practice it. We don’t just approve it, we encourage people to “come out of the closet”, which is a synonym for “proudly practice your homosexuality.”

Homosexuality is NOT Love

Let’s see what the Bible says love is NOT:

It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no account of wrongs. Love takes no pleasure in evil, but rejoices in the truth.
– Corinthians 13:5-6

When you want to do what pleases you not minding if that thing is right, you have no love. If you desire what scriptures say is evil, that is not love either. Homosexuality is not love. Sexual desires do not define love. Love is defined by God.

What if I have these homosexual desires?

I told you there were two reasons we had to understand the etymology of lust. Lust means desire. Man will always have desires. And the only way to do away with one kind of desire is to replace it with another. Just like the flesh has desires, the Holy Spirit has desires too.

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
– Galatians 5:16, 22-24

You can only replace the desires of the flesh by producing the fruit of the Holy Spirit. If you allow yourself to accept the sinful homosexual practices as your identity, you cannot expect to desire the things of God’s Holy Spirit. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

It all comes down to one question: Do you want to please God, or do you want to please yourself?

Christian Love brings Joy

You will see that when you begin to love like Jesus, you have no need to be accepted by men. All you desire is the love of God. Those who practice abortions and homosexuality need to be satisfied in their flesh to have a glimpse of happiness. That little happiness never satisfies, and it is very temporary. It always leads to destruction and eternal damnation in hell.

The Christian Joy comes from the assurance that God loves him, and that his final home in heaven is guaranteed. Christian love does not deprive man of happiness. On the contrary, a true Christian always has joy within him.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ, teach me to love like you. Teach me to accept your word and teachings. And teach me to teach others all that you command. I reject all the teachings and practices in favour of abortion and homosexual practices. Help me to live a Holy and loving life, according to your will. Amen.
